Fantasy has owned the tactical RPG for forty years. Swords, elves, the same nine schools of magic. The turn-based sci-fi RPG shelf is thinner, and that thinness is the reason the good ones land so hard. When a studio builds a party-based combat system around energy weapons, implants and radiation, it usually has a specific argument to make about how those things should feel in a fight.

These four earn the setting instead of reskinning a dungeon crawl in chrome. If you want the broader picture across every setting, we have the genre ranked by tactical depth elsewhere. This list stays in space and in the ruins.

1. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

Owlcat put a full CRPG behind the wheel of a void-faring trade dynasty, and the scale still surprises people. You command a ship, a crew and a colony holding, and the turn-based fights sprawl across two dozen combatants once officers start stacking buffs on each other.

The build math is the draw. Momentum, heroic acts and desperate measures turn a well-planned round into an absurd chain of extra attacks, and figuring out which archetype triggers that chain is a genuine puzzle. It launched rough in December 2023 and took most of a year of patches to settle, which is worth knowing before you commit ninety hours.

It shipped the same day on PC, Mac, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, so console tacticians are not locked out. Its Steam listing tracks the DLC seasons, and if the setting is the hook more than the combat, the rest of the 40K strategy lineup is worth a look.

2. Wasteland 3

inXile’s frozen Colorado is the most approachable pick here. Combat runs on action points and a clean cover system, the encounter design respects your time, and the tone stays funny without undercutting the choices you make about which faction gets to run the state.

It is also the only one of the four with a two-player co-op campaign, which changes the texture of every ambush when a friend is spending their own action points badly. The weakness is a familiar one for a 2020 release, namely that a few late-game builds trivialize fights the writing wants you to sweat. Sniper stacking is still absurd.

3. Colony Ship: A Post-Earth Role Playing Game

Iron Tower Studio made the purest turn-based science fiction RPG of the group, set entirely aboard a generation ship crawling toward Proxima Centauri. It went 1.0 in November 2023 at 19.99 dollars, which makes it the cheapest ticket on this page and the shortest campaign.

There is no experience from grinding random kills, so your character sheet is a set of deliberate commitments rather than a slow accumulation. Specialize hard or lose. That design makes the first few fights brutal for anyone who spreads points thin, and Iron Tower has never pretended otherwise. Check the store page for the demo before buying, because this one filters people fast.

4. Encased: A Sci-Fi Post-Apocalyptic RPG

Dark Crystal Games set its 2021 release in an alternate 1970s under the Dome, an impossible artifact in the desert that a corporation has decided to strip-mine. You pick one of five CRONUS wings at the start, and that choice changes your skills, your contacts and how most factions greet you.

The opening act is the best imitation of classic Fallout anyone has managed in years. The back half is where reviews split, and the roughly three-in-four positive rating on Steam reflects that honestly, since the pacing sags and a few companion arcs stop short of where they were heading. At 29.99 dollars it is a fair ask for the first fifteen hours alone. Players who want the same tactical rigor with spellbooks should read our fantasy counterpart list.

Which Turn-Based Sci-Fi RPG Should You Start With?

Start with Wasteland 3 if you have never played one of these and want a system that teaches itself. Go to Rogue Trader if you want the deepest build math and have ninety hours to give it. Take Colony Ship when you want a tight, mean campaign that ends before it repeats itself, and Encased if the alternate-1970s premise is doing the work for you.

One honorable mention. Underrail, from Stygian Software, is a sci-fi turn-based RPG set in the metro states beneath a dead surface, and it is harsher than anything above. Its 2019 Expedition and 2023 Heavy Duty expansions kept it alive a decade after launch, but it assumes you enjoy reading tooltips more than you enjoy winning. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best turn-based sci-fi RPG right now?

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader has the deepest combat system and the largest campaign of the current crop. It is also the biggest time commitment at around ninety hours. If you want the best experience per hour rather than the most hours, Wasteland 3 is the smarter first pick.

Are any of these turn-based sci-fi RPGs free?

None of them. Colony Ship is the cheapest at 19.99 dollars, Encased sits at 29.99 dollars, and Rogue Trader and Wasteland 3 are full-price releases that discount often. Colony Ship has a free demo on Steam, which is the closest thing to a no-cost way in.

Can I play these on PS5 or Xbox?

Rogue Trader launched the same day on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S alongside PC and Mac. Wasteland 3 is available on PlayStation and Xbox as well. Colony Ship and Underrail are PC only, and there has been no console port announced for either.

How do I stop losing the early fights in Colony Ship?

Pick one combat approach and put everything into it. The game gives no experience for random kills, so a character split between guns, melee and social skills will fail all three. Take one weapon skill to a usable threshold first, then branch.

What games are like Wasteland 3?

Underrail and ATOM RPG are the closest matches for the post-apocalyptic tone and the turn-based, action-point combat. Encased is the nearest thing to a direct successor for the classic Fallout feel. All three are slower and less forgiving than Wasteland 3.
